We recently spent a week up north enjoying the beauty of the mitten state.
The Kalling crew smitten with the mitten:
Enjoying the sunset at Pointe Betsie Lighthouse…
Gotta love the sunsets on Lake Michigan.
We were also treated to an awesome moon rise on Crystal Lake where we stayed. We kayaked out on the lake to catch the sunset and then paddled the other way to face the moon rise.
Pictures don’t do the magnificent moon justice. It was a breathtaking experience watching the reddish-orange moon rise shortly after sunset.
(We had another breathtaking experience after the moonrise when Gramma Kalling attempted her first climb out of the kayak. Being the good-natured sport she is, she laughed hard as she tried different ways to get out, with “help” from her two sons. We were all out of breath from laughter for quite some time. Steve would later say that that was his favorite part of the trip. Good times!)
We stayed in a beach cottage at Chimney Corners.
It was great to be able to step off the deck and right onto the beach! We also rented tandem kayaks for the week, so we were able to use the boats anytime we wanted. (Well, except way after dark. Wouldn’t be exactly ideal to get hit with a speed boat.)
The water was icy cold but that didn’t stop our born-for-water girls.
(Proof that Gramma Kalling was in the kayak!)
Our cozy kitchen and dining area where great dinner meals were made by Chef Steve (now that’s what I call a vacation–not having to cook!)
Dessert was made by Aunt Karen as well, as she and her two assistants baked delicious pumpkin pies.
To help balance all the great food we consumed, we hiked up the mountain behind our cottage. (Never mind that we took food on the hike which kind of defeats the purpose.)
We saw deer… and a cute little moose.
The view from the mountaintop was of Lake Michigan at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Mountaintop selfies, because why not.
A great week enjoying Pure Michigan…
…til next time, Mitten State!
